“Come follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men” Matthew 4:19
A disciple is a lot like a fly-rod. In the hands of a Master, they can be used to catch lots of fish.
Christ’s invitation to the disciples was to surrender themselves into His masterful hands, and that through Him, He would use them to make a difference in the lives of men.
Jeremiah 18:6 says, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand”. The invitation of discipleship is to allow the Master to have His way in us. The clay doesn’t tell the master what to do, or how to do it… it simply surrenders to the hand of the Master, and the Master does the extraordinary with it.
The first step in becoming a disciple of Christ is to allow Him the freedom to create in you what He, as the Master, so chooses. It is an act of the will that says, “Have your way in my life, God. You are the Potter, and I am the clay.” And when you are willing to let Christ have that place in your life, He then has the freedom to do extraordinary things in and through you.
And this is why the journey of discipleship starts right here, at the Mastery of Christ. Before another single step can be taken, a person must make a conscious decision to make Christ their Master and to surrender their lives into his hands. You cannot be a disciple without it. It is the first Mark of a genuine disciple of Jesus.
