“Don’t give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25
Staying in community can be a difficult task because a relationship requires time, energy, commitment, and grace. Yet the Bible warns against those who waver in its importance and disconnect from the body. Proverbs 18:1 says “He who separates himself seeks his own desire, and quarrels against all sound wisdom.” In laymen’s terms that means that the Lone Ranger Christian isn’t making the best decisions.
Hebrews 10:25 exhorts the believer to make community a priority in their lives. “Don’t give up meeting together” suggests that we have a propensity to diminish the value of community when we are in it. However a wise disciple understands that they will have to work to keep community a vibrant and active part of their lives. Disciples embrace an intentional commitment to stay connected to the vital relationships that connect them to the Body and keep them burning bright as disciples.
This commitment doesn’t come from thinking that Community is just an “add-on” to the life of a disciple. We become committed to community when we understand that without it, we will never become who God has invited us to become. We need community.
